Who We Are

Socially Responsible Surgery is a student group at the University of Kansas School of Medicine dedicated to integrating ethical and equitable practices into surgical care. We focus on addressing health disparities, promoting sustainability, and considering the broader social impact of surgery. Our activities include hosting a monthly surgical clinic to provide hands-on experience and community service, as well as promoting education and research within the field. Our goal is to foster a responsible approach to surgery that benefits both individuals and the community.

What We Do

At Socially Responsible Surgery, we engage in a variety of activities aimed at integrating social responsibility into surgical practice:

Surgical Clinics: We host clinics providing free surgical care to the homeless population in downtown Kansas City. These clinics offer hands-on experience for our members while addressing critical needs in our community.

Research: Our research department is dedicated to gathering and analyzing data to advance the field of socially responsible surgery. We focus on identifying and addressing gaps and challenges within surgical practice to promote better outcomes and equitable care.

Education: We educate upcoming third-year medical students on the principles of socially responsible surgery, preparing them for their rotations with a focus on ethics, equity, and sustainability in surgical care.

Through these efforts, we aim to foster a more ethical and inclusive approach to surgery, benefiting both our patients and the broader community.
